Balustrading with integrated glass ‘jewels’ that help articulate the elevations to the East Mall within Bullring Birmingham have been protected and polyester powder coated by Medway Galvanising Company. Sittingbourne based corrosion protection and coatings specialist, Medway Galvanising, took delivery of the steel structures from the fabricator in sections and applied an Interpon D finish. The specially formulated colour – denoted QX 160E – is a deep grey brown and will offer up to 20 years’ lifespan without need for redecoration. The balustrading, which is fitted around the voids in the East Mall, totals almost 500 metres in length. It has been designed by the lead design consultant, Benoy Architects, in collaboration with a long time customer of Medway Galvanising who are also manufacturing and installing the work. A spokesperson for Medway’s customer, Terry McKeown, comments: “This is a very high profile project and one where quality is of paramount importance. We have utilised the services of Medway Galvanising on many past contracts and therefore had no hesitation in seeking their help here. Everything proceeded well and the deliveries were made to schedule.” Bullring Birmingham is a £500 million investment by The Birmingham Alliance, a partnership between Hammerson, Henderson Global Investors and Land Securities.
